In each jurisdiction, there are one or more bodies that manage the certification process. These bodies referred to as the 'certifying authority'. The certifying authority/authorities in each jurisdiction where certification is offered are responsible for implementing and managing the national certification process in that jurisdiction. All applicants will apply for certification through their local certifying authority, and the local authority is the first point of call for all interested parties.
The role of AITSL in the national certification process is to support the certifying authorities and ensure consistency is maintained in the national process. AITSL is not responsible for assessing applications or certifying teachers.
Information sessions, workshops, professional learning and training to support applicants and assessors are conducted by certifying authorities.
Teachers interested in the national certification process are to contact the certifying authority in their state/territory for further information about national certification.

In NSW, national certification is referred to as 'Highly Accomplished Teacher Accreditation' and 'Lead Teacher Accreditation'. This process is managed by NESA.
