What have we done?

We have incorporated requirements for the consistent and robust assessment of pre-service teachers into the revised ITE Standards and Procedures. ITE providers must ensure that all students are classroom ready by the time they graduate by conducting rigorous assessments against the Graduate career stage of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

What's next?

We will work closely with key stakeholders to develop, trial or validate high quality and reliable assessment instruments that will support initial teacher education providers to meet the new requirements.

Why focus on assessment?

In its report, Action Now: Classroom Ready Teachers, the Teacher Education Ministerial Advisory Group identified a lack of consistent and authentic assessment practices across Australia. Without an understanding of whether pre-service teachers have enough training and educational skills, it is challenging for universities to demonstrate the quality of their programs.

This is why consistent assessment of pre-service teachers is vital in producing highly capable and skilled graduates from initial teacher education programs around Australia.

What will the outcome be?

Through the strengthened accreditation process, all universities must demonstrate that their pre-service teachers have been rigorously assessed before graduation. As a result, students, families and schools can be assured that all new teachers have met Graduate career stage of the Teacher Standards and are well-equipped to have a positive impact on student learning.
