Next steps in initial teacher education reform

Ensuring that ITE program accreditation decisions are made consistently and to an appropriately high standard across Australia

• AITSL will lead a standard setting process with all jurisdictions to confirm sound national agreement on what it means to meet the Accreditation Program Standards, and to form the basis for ongoing decision-making in ITE program accreditation.

• AITSL will continue to collaborate with all jurisdictions in ongoing national quality assurance activities to strengthen consistency and rigour of the ITE accreditation system and identify priorities for enhancing judgements.
  

Ensuring that all ITE programs require graduates to pass a reliable and valid teaching performance assessment (TPA), which demands a demonstration of an appropriate level of classroom readiness

• AITSL has established a TPA expert advisory group that will provide advice to teacher regulatory authorities and ITE providers on the reliability and validity of each TPA as part of the ITE accreditation process.

• AITSL will lead benchmarking with jurisdictions of the passing standard between different TPAs to confirm these assessments are consistently assessing pre-service teachers’ competence against the Graduate Teacher Standards.
  

Using the information generated by the ITE accreditation system to create an evidence base on what works best in ITE in Australia

• All jurisdictions will provide AITSL with the data and information collected on the impact of ITE programs (as per Program Standard 6.3 and 6.4) for national analysis.

• By centralising data on program impact, submitted as part of the ITE accreditation process, AITSL and ITE stakeholders will start to build a national picture of progress and a strong evidence base on what works best in ITE in Australia.
