What have we done?

All ITE students must have personal literacy and numeracy skills broadly equivalent to the top 30% of the population. The Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students has been developed to ensure that all new students meet the standard.

Why a focus on literacy and numeracy?

The Teacher Education Ministerial Advisory Group report, Action Now: Classroom Ready Teachers, found teacher employers had concerns with the classroom readiness of initial teacher education graduates and that the confidence in the quality and effectiveness of new teachers must be addressed. The introduction of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students is a key recommendation of the Advisory Group’s report.

What will the outcome be?

The Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students is one response to public concerns about the quality of ITE graduates. The test complements the rest of the ITE Reform by boosting public confidence in the effectiveness of ITE programs in preparing new teachers.
