Framework for Teacher Registration in Australia
Australian teachers are members of a registered profession. Registration is a public description of the unique academic, personal and ethical benchmarks that individuals must meet to qualify and continue to practise as teachers. Each state and territory has established an authority or agency with responsibility for teacher registration.
AITSL led work to develop a nationally consistent framework for the registration of teachers in all states and territories in 2011. This framework was reviewed in 2023-2024, and a revised framework was agreed by Education Ministers in August 2024.
The framework sets out uniform principles for the registration of teachers in education settings (including teachers in early childhood settings) across Australia. It outlines a nationally consistent approach to the registration of teachers, where applicable, across the states and territories.
