Australian Teacher Workforce Survey

Each year between July and November (each state differs) we ask registered teachers and leaders across schools and early childhood settings to share their experiences and challenges of working in the profession through the Australian Teacher Workforce Survey. The more teachers we hear from, the richer our understanding of the current teaching experience.

The Teacher Survey asks about:

  • your wellbeing and job demands
  • your hours – the time you spend teaching and preparing to teach
  • your career intentions – whether you plan to stay in the profession
  • your workforce arrangements – including your contractual arrangements and working hours

When the survey opens in 2025 your teacher regulatory authority will send you an email invitation.

Here’s what teachers told us before...
76% of the teacher workforce are women
83% of registered teachers were born in Australia
70% of registered teachers are aged 30-59
74% of the teacher workforce have more than 10 years’ experience
74% of registered teachers are working full-time
Transitions to middle leadership typically occur after 10-19 years in the profession
Full-time classroom teachers work an average of 53.7 hours per week during term
4% of registered teachers are working in early childhood services
15% of registered teachers are not working as teachers
10% of the teacher workforce are employed on casual relief contracts
